PJ was recently interviewed by an analyst. Here’s the Q&A.
- What do you regard as the characteristics of a good leader? Character. Competence. Chemistry. Compelling.
- How do effective leaders deal with diversity in their team? A. Have the base-level mindset that a diverse team is potentially a stronger team than a homogenous one…so long as it works. B. Then actively promote RELATIONAL connection amongst the team, to build respect and understanding, as without the walls of suspicion and arrogance being broken down, the team will at best be unhappy, and at worst implode.
- How important is it for a leader to build trust? If it is important, how does a leader build a trust relationship? Very. By modelling a consistency between what he says and does.
- How do you ensure that your team work together to achieve the company’s/organisations’ objectives? Have a leader who (a) is crystal clear on the objectives, then (b) aligns people to tasks/roles that fit their individual gifts/strengths, and (c) then aligns each person/role to achieve the objectives of the company.
- How do you deal with those people that undermine the team? Try and win them, and if that fails remove them.
- How do you communicate your vision to your team? Live it and Speak it.
- What do you regard as the single most important aspect of effective leadership? Choosing the right people for the right jobs.
- What in your opinion, should a leader never do. (1) Never break his word (2) Never be reluctant or slow to say sorry.
- Other comments (if any): Hire the best assistant you can, as early in your career as you can.
